Apple Picking

Angelenos can be a greedy.  We have the sun, surf, sand, mountains, and when Fall comes around, we'd like out apple picking too please.  It is not exactly convenient to get there but if you are willing to make a day trip out of the city, driving inland for about two hours, you can find a place where the city feels very far away indeed.

Braeburn Apples

Last week in Oak Glen we visited several apple orchards offering apple picking, and a few just offering delicious cider, pie and fresh apple cider doughnuts.  The weather was a cool and breezy and the orchards were full of Braeburns, Red Delicious and Pink Pearl apples, look at those colors.

We wanderd through the orchard rows and helped ourselves to about 15 pounds of apples.

We spent the last week making everything from jam to salads with them.  We now have a pantry full of apple jelly, apple cake, apple sauce and apple butter.

Pink Pearl Apples
Delicious apple recipes, if you too were a little overzealous in your apple picking.

Apple Spice cake - Eat it now or freeze it for later when your apple hangover wears off
Apple Jelly & Pink Pearl Jam - I know I have mentioned this book before but it is really worth adding to your cookbook library.
